The
Farm
Chesapeake
Alpacas is located on the East coast of the US, in the Mid-Atlantic region,
on Maryland's Kent Island.
The Chesapeake Bay, the great estuary that divides the state's western and
eastern shores, bounds the island on the west. Despite its peaceful, rural
setting, Chesapeake Alpacas is within easy reach of many of the largest metropolitan
areas of the eastern U.S and major airports. The farm is just 45 minutes from
Washington, DC and Baltimore and is easily accessible from US Route 50. Historic
downtown Annapolis,
home of the U.S. Naval Academy, is
a short 25-minute drive.
The
waterfront farm is situated on 15 acres of historic
farmland and is often a resting place for migrating geese and
swan, as well as the year-round home of various herons and egrets.
Visitors in late afternoon are frequently treated to spectacular
vistas as the sun sets over the bay. But the real stars, of course,
are the alpacas. Spring and fall are the best times to visit to
view the latest crop of crias.
It
is clear that the alpacas' interests are placed above all else. The barn was
specifically designed for their comfort. Cross-breezes keep the area well
ventilated and cool in the summer. Heat lamps prevent newborn crias from getting
chilled. Fencing is designed for protection against dogs and other predators.
Pastures are well maintained for maximum nutritional benefits and are tested
yearly. Fresh water and quality hay are always provided.
