Determing the Value of an Alpaca

Frequently Asked Questions

Chesapeake Alpacas, Inc.

SkipJackDetermining the Value of an Alpaca

There are several factors that determine the value of an individual alpaca:

Age — Usually the price of an individual alpaca will increase as the animal reaches maturity. A bred female will often sell for more than a maiden of the same quality. A proven female that has already produced offspring may also command a higher price than a female carrying her first pregnancy. Similarly, a male will sell for a higher price once he begins breeding. A proven male can also command a higher price than an unproven male with no offspring on the ground.

Sex — Females command the highest average price, but herd sire quality males usually bring the highest individual prices.

Color — This is often the preference of the buyer and can be highly variable from one person to the next. We recommend you buy what you like.

Fleece Quality — Factors such as density, uniformity, fineness/handle can influence cost.

Conformation — Factors to consider include body condition, legs, bite, etc.

Pedigree — A rare or highly desired pedigree often commands premium prices. Look for animals that have proven track records and exhibit the qualities you value.

Purchase Options

Cash — Most alpaca sales are cash transactions.

Short term owner financing — Some farms may offer short term financing, often with no interest. Terms vary from 3 months to 4 years.

Conventional loan (home equity, line of credit, etc.)

Livestock Loan — Probably will require a proven track record of farming operations or a well-developed business plan.

Final Word

Many people consider alpaca breeding to be an attractive investment opportunity that allows for financial gain as well as the opportunity to personally manage your own investment and experience the rewards of raising these wonderful animals. The ultimate success of your alpaca venture will be determined largely by your own abilities to market your animals, fiber and products; communicate effectively within the industry; and build lasting relationships with your customers. If you are considering an investment in alpacas, we urge you to thoroughly research the industry and make you own assessment as to the investment value of alpacas for your personal financial situation and goals.
