Tom and LuAnn
Lumsden of Kent Island, Maryland own and operate Chesapeake Alpacas. Both
busy professionals, they longed for a more simplistic lifestyle and a refuge
from the fast pace of their hectic careers. After purchasing property in rural
Queen Anne's County they
set out looking for animals to raise on their farm. They considered horses,
sheep, llamas and angora goats, but discovered alpacas at a local show and
were immediately drawn to their expressive faces and large, soulful eyes.
Because their property includes wetlands, they wanted an animal that would
not interfere with the delicate balance between land and water. The "earth-friendly"
alpaca provided the perfect solution as well as a sound business opportunity.
Shortly thereafter, Chesapeake Alpacas was officially established.
Since then
their herd of suri and huacaya alpacas has grown. Tom and LuAnn have no regrets.
Alpaca ownership has been personally fulfilling and financially rewarding.
Tom enjoys maintaining the facilities and equipment and ensuring that pastures
are in top condition. For LuAnn, who now cares for the alpacas full time,
the passion lies in the planning of breedings and in looking after the moms
and crias. Both Tom and LuAnn spend considerable time working with their alpacas.
The result of this extra effort and attention is well-adjusted alpacas that
are easily handled.
Tom
and LuAnn are optimistic about the future of the alpaca industry and have
made a long-term commitment to their business. So whether you visit today,
tomorrow, or ten years from now, they plan to be there to greet you and welcome
you to this wonderful lifestyle.
